MDS Analytical Technologies Snapshot
MDS Analytical Technologies is a leading global supplier of life sciences tools comprised of two channel brands, Sciex and Molecular Devices. Sciex offers proven market leadership in mass spectrometry and Molecular Devices is the gold standard in high-performance bioanalytical measurement systems. MDS Analytical Technologies operates in an estimated US$6 billion market with 6% to 10% growth rates, with 95% of the business coming from export markets.
MDS Analytical Technologies is one of three business units that make up MDS Inc. This global life sciences company is a leading innovator in providing products, services and new tools that support drug discovery and development and analytical measurement in the most prestigious laboratories in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, government, academic and industry. MDS Analytical Technologies headquartered in the Toronto area, employs more than 1,100 people including a 230-strong global sales and support team.
Sciex
Sciex researches, designs and produces mass spectrometers and other scientific instruments. Mass spectrometers are highly sophisticated and sensitive measurement tools. The mass spectrometers produced at Sciex are so sensitive in their ability to conduct analysis that they can detect a pinch of salt in a body of water equal to 12 Olympic sized swimming pools. These instruments are being used increasingly as more companies shift to targeted drug development programs. The demand for these products continues to grow - especially in the biopharmaceutical industry - with companies increasing their investments in research and development. They are currently being used by pharmaceutical and biotech companies as well as academic researchers in 60 countries around the world in the following areas:
In drug discovery and development in clinical and academic research, where these highly sophisticated analytical instruments help researchers to uncover the cause of disease and analyze proteins to advance the development and discovery of new drugs.
In environmental analysis, where companies involved in environmental testing and agri-chemical production rely on Sciex systems to check for trace contaminants in ground soil, run-off water, plants and animals, and to ensure compliance with government regulations.
In industry, where they can screen for impurities and contamination in the manufacturing of food, computer microchips and other products.
Joint Venture Partners
Sciex markets products in more than 60 countries through global joint ventures with two of the world's leading analytical instrumentation and life sciences companies, Applied Biosystems, a business of the Applera Corporation and PerkinElmer Inc.
In each of these partnerships, Sciex is responsible for the research, development and manufacturing of analytical instruments, while our joint venture partners manage worldwide sales, marketing and customer service.
In the joint venture with Applied Biosystems, Sciex supplies mass spectrometer-based products for use in drug discovery and development, and uncovering the causes of human disease. The major customers are contract research organizations, and pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies around the world.
In joint venture with PerkinElmer, Sciex supplies mass spectrometer-based products for use in the semi-conductor industry, geological and clinical diagnostics, and environmental protection.
